Optimization for energy consumption in drying section of fluting paper machine

Abstract: Non-linear programming optimization method was used to optimize total steam and air consumption in the dryer section of multi-cylinder fluting paper machine. Equality constraints of the optimization model were obtained from specified process blocks considering mass and energy balance relationships in drying and heat recovery sections. Inequality constraints correspond to process parameters such as production capacity, operating conditions, and other limitations. Using the simulation, the process parameters can… Show more

“…Given the rising costs of electricity and gas, paper mills will be forced to introduce new, energy-efficient solutions in paper production in order to be competitive in the market. Recently, many articles have been written describing ways to improve the energy efficiency of pulp and paper mills [1,2,7,8]. The system is supplied with energy from gas and low-pressure steam.…”

“…Kong et al found that the drying section had about 4.6% energy saving potential by reasonably adjusting the ventilation system for a corrugated paper machine [21]. Ghodbanan [22] and Li [23] et al found the total steam consumption can be reduced about 11 and 5.6% by optimizing the operation conditions, respectively; Laurijssen et al pointed out that heat consumption can be reduced by 32% by increasing the dew point temperature and further recovering the waste heat [24]. But high inlet air temperature will increase the steam consumption of the air heater, Sundqvist points out that increasing the supply air temperature from 80-90 °C to 120-130 °C, the steam consumption of the drying section will increase by 2% [25].…”

“…Kong et al (Kong and Liu 2012) used the cylinder group as the minimum modeling unit and the sequential module method to establish a static energy model. Ghodbanan et al (Ghodbanan et al 2017; simulated the drying process of fluting paper and optimized the operating parameters, such as paper dryness and exhaust air humidity based on a nonlinear programming method. Anders et al (Ottosson et al 2017) proposed a paper drying process model that can predict the evaporation load of the drying process under different yields.…”
