Optimization of a Small Wind Power Plant for Annual Wind Speed Distribution

Abstract: This article presents a method to adjust the elements of a small wind power plant to the wind speed characterized by the highest annual level of energy. Tests were carried out on the basis of annual wind distributions at three locations. The standard range of wind speeds was reduced to that resulting from the annual wind speed distributions in these locations. The construction of the generators and the method of their excitation were adapted to the characteristics of the turbines. The results obtained for the … Show more

“…Small-scale wind power generation is not as popular as large-scale wind power; searching for "small winds" in the database of MDPI found 59 research articles, only, compared to 900 for "wind power" or "wind energy" for the same period from 2010 to 2019. Lack of interest towards small wind systems for decades resulted in highly counterproductive VAWTs, lower efficiency, and hence, high costs per kilowatt [57,58]. The development of smart grids and distributed energy systems is spurring renewed interest in small energy again.…”

“…These techniques can lower per-kilowatt prices for small-scale wind generation, which could be a basis for its popularity in the near future. More work and research on large-scale wind generation has resulted in a surprising decrease in prices during the past 15 years [58,65]. Likewise, if the research in small wind energy continues, engineers will find it more attractive to harness energy from small wind sources.…”

“…The factor φ is the capital recovery factor representing the weights between the four types of costs, as given in (7). The second term of (6) shows the penalty of shortage power in the limited power mode due to wind uncertainty. The third term of (6) shows the penalty for the shortage of reserve capacity in the reserve power mode.…”

“…The third term of (6) shows the penalty for the shortage of reserve capacity in the reserve power mode. The fourth term of (6) shows the profit by selling power from WFs to the power system. The coefficients α, β represent the weight of each grid-code constraint in the operation of W. Equation ( 8) is used to compute the total cost of the power conversion system using the rated output power of the ESS (P) and the unit cost of power electronics.…”
