Optimization of Atmospheric Plasma Spray Process Parameters using a Design of Experiment for Alloy 625 coatings

Abstract: Alloy 625 is a Ni-based superalloy which is often a good solution to surface engineering problems involving high temperature corrosion, wear, and thermal degradation. Coatings of alloy 625 can be efficiently deposited by thermal spray methods such as Air Plasma Spraying. As in all thermal spray processes, the final properties of the coatings are determined by the spraying parameters. In the present study, a D-optimal experimental design was used to characterize the effects of the APS process parameters on in-f… Show more

“…Therefore, the microstructural characteristics of the coating which affect its mechanical properties are more critical than in conventional applications of thermal spray deposits, and require thorough investigation. Porosity is known to decrease the elastic moduli and strength of thermal plasma coatings, [14] and the presence of oxide phases can be expected to reduce the ductility substantially. In a previous study of the APS deposition of alloy 625 coatings, [15,16] spray parameters optimized to produce homogenous coatings with minimum porosity and oxide content on stainless steel substrates were identified. In anticipation of the production of foam core sandwich structures, the present paper examines in more detail the microstructure and phase composition of alloy 625 coatings deposited by APS on coupons of graphite filled nickel foam (Fig.…”
