Optimization of design parameters of a limited angle torque motor using analytical hierarchy process and axiomatic design theory

Abstract: The limited angle torque motor (LATM) has been widely used in systems that require limited motion, ranging from the simple ON-OFF servo valves to the accurate tracking of a reference signal. This paper presents the optimum design procedures of a LATM. According to a request from industry, a two-pole LATM with a toroidal armature winding was designed based on analysis of magnetic equivalent circuit of motor structure, and using selected ferromagnetic material and rare-earth permanent magnets. To select the best… Show more

“…However, all LATMs have a common characteristic, that is, the output torque is almost constant in a particular angle range, and this range is called the constant torque region [8][9][10]. Because of its excellent performance, the constant torque region is usually used as the operational range of the LATM [11,12]. Because of requirements for lighter and smaller equipment in the aerospace field, improving the power density of LATMs is a primary optimization objective [13].…”

“…For this type, cogging torque and partial magnetic saturation result in a non-uniform torque profile [5]. Toroidally wound stator LATM with PM rotor does not have the cogging torque problem due to the constant reluctance path and relatively large air-gap [2], so this configuration has wide applications for its advantages of accurate positioning capability, low cogging torque, and high reliability [6][7][8][9].…”

“…It is therefore a multi-objective optimization design problem. In [8,9], a simple EMCM model of a LASM is developed and hierarchy process (AHP) or axiomatic design (AD) methods are used to simplify the design procedure. But only a two pole design is studied, and the AHP or AD algorithm are known to be suitable for comparing existing solutions rather than for preliminary design.…”
