Development of renewable energy (RE) and mitigation of carbon dioxide, as the two largest climate action initiatives are the most challenging factors for new generation green data center (GDC). Reduction of conventional electricity consumption as well as cost of electricity (COE) with preferred quality of service (QoS) has been recognized as the interesting research topic in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Moreover, it becomes challenging to design a large-scale sustainable GDC with standalone RE supply. This paper gives spotlight on hybrid energy supply solution for the GDC to reduce grid electricity usage and minimum net system cost. The proposed framework includes RE source such as solar photovoltaic, wind turbine and non-renewable energy sources as Disel Generator (DG) and Battery. A hybrid optimization model is designed using HOMER software for cost assessment and energy evaluation to validate the effectiveness of the suggested scheme focusing on eco-friendly implication.

Smart grid technology has been recognized as a promising solution for the next-generation energy efficient electric power systems to mitigate energy crisis. Smart grid provides highly consistent and reliable services, efficient energy management practices, smart metering integration, automation and precision decision support systems and self-healing facilities. The smart power grid introduces a sensing, monitoring, and control system that provides end users with the cost of energy at any moment through real-time pricing. The classical power system operation has no control over the loads except in an emergency situation when a portion of the loads can be dropped as needed to balance the power grid generation with its loads. Furthermore, the smart power grid supplies the platform for the use of renewable energy sources that acts as a safeguard against a complete blackout of the interconnected power grid. In this work, all the concepts involved in smart grid mechanism is implemented with PIC18F452 microcontroller and other supplementary components. A solar module with storage capacity is connected to the proposed system for minimizing grid energy consumption and plays a primary energy source for maximum utilization of green energy. This intelligent device may inherently reduce the consumption of electrical energy during peak hours and allow consumers to sell back electricity into grid using bi-directional technique. Barriers, challenges, benefits and future trends regarding the technologies and the role of users have also been discussed in this paper.

Energy Efficient Throughput Aware Traffic Load Balancing in Green Cellular Networks

With the augmentation of affordable multimedia wireless gadgets, the ubiquitous availability of internet access and the rapid pace of mobile traffic motivate research towards fifth generation (5G) communications to realize energy-efficient cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) with guaranteed quality of experience. Exploiting green energy harvesting for powering the C-RAN substantially alleviates the energy procurement from the utility grid, carbon footprint and operational expenses. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic point selection coordinated multipoint (DPS CoMP) based load balancing paradigm emphasizing on achievable throughput and energy efficiency by reducing utility grid consumption from a network level perspective. This paper investigate the radio efficiency, energy efficiency (EE) and average on-grid energy saving addressing the key challenges of tempo-spatial dynamics of traffic intensity and renewable energy (RE) generation under a wide range of networks setup. Endeavoring load balancing technique strives a balance in network utilities such as green energy utilization and user association based on BS coordination in a cluster. Provision of cell sleep approach is contemplated for energy saving by turning off lightly base stations (BSs) during low traffic arrivals. The proposed CoMP based load balancing algorithm proficiently manages resource block allocation to the new users and elevated the energy efficiency over the conventional location and traffic centric mechanisms. Extensive system-level simulations manifest that the suggested framework enable adjustable trade-off between radio efficiency and EE, and saves 22% on-grid power consumption and increases EE index by 32%. Afterwards, an exhaustive comparison of the proposed method with the existing schemes is pledged for further validation highlighting sustainable 5G wireless systems.INDEX TERMS Energy efficiency, coordinated multipoint, hybrid power supply, centralized RAN, load balancing, cell zooming, green communication.
