Optimization of the Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite Powders for Biomedical Applications Using Taguchi's Method

Abstract: A conventional method of chemical precipitation was used to produce hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders, with a molar ratio of Ca/P=1.67, for biomedical applications. The aim of this work was to study the effect of four control factors, namely pH, reaction temperature, reagent concentration and flow rate addition, at three levels, on the Ca/P ratio of the synthesized powders, using the Taguchi design of experiments method. Nine powders were synthesized using Ca(NO3)2ּ4H2O and (NH4)2HPO4 as starting reagents. The Ca/P… Show more

“…Briefly, the Taguchi methods are statistical methods developed by Genichi Taguchi to improve the quality of manufactured goods and more recently applied to biotechnology, marketing, and advertising [31][32][33]. Namely, Taguchi specified three possible situations: first, 'more is better' (MB), and, in the case studied here, this was the mechanical strength of the toughened scaffolds; second, 'less is better' (LB), and, in the case stuided here, this was the amount of the deposited PCL; third, on-target minimum variation (e.g.…”

“…A good example of the efficient analyses of various complex systems consists of a statistical experimental design and Taguchi methods [31][32][33]. The statistical experimental design can determine the factor effects on characteristic properties and select the optimum conditions for these factors.…”

“…A conventional statistical experimental design can determine the optimum conditions based on the measured values of the characteristic properties, while the Taguchi experimental design (also known as a robust parameter design) does this on the basis of a variability of the characteristic properties. In other words, Taguchi methods can determine the experimental conditions having the least variability as the optimum conditions [25][26][27][28].…”
