The effects of torrefaction of the biopellets made from hardwood chip residue (HW), camellia oilseed cake (CO), and pruning remnants of the toothache tree (TA) and mulberry tree (MT) were evaluated. Torrefaction of the biopellets reduced the volatile matter content of biopellets by 18–58% and increased their heating value by 18–58% without negatively impacting durability or fines content. Torrefaction also reduced the initial ignition time of biopellets by 50–59% and prolonged their combustion duration by 15–24%. Regardless of the type of feedstock, all biopellets exhibited mass yields in the range of 60–80% and energy yields ranging from 80–95%. The novelty of this study lies in the application of torrefaction to already-formed biopellets, which enhances pellet quality without the need for binders, and the use of unused forest biomass and wood chip residue from pulp mills. The use of unused forest biomass and wood chip residue from pulp mills for biopellet production not only provides a sustainable and efficient method for waste utilization but also contributes to environmental conservation by reducing the reliance on fossil fuels. Overall, the torrefaction of biopellets represents a promising technology for producing high-quality solid biofuel from a variety of woody biomass feedstocks without compromising pelletizing efficiency.

The paper presents research on the process of densifying rye-wheat straw for its use in producing mouldable biofuel. The straw used in the research is a waste material from a farm located in Wielkopolska, resulting from the cultivation of triticale for the purpose of producing feed for pig farming. The aim of the study is to determine the utilisation of this material for the production of an agglomerate for energy purposes, such as heating the farm’s infrastructure. The research was conducted for two moisture levels of straw: M = 10% and 30%. Before the experiment, the straw was cut into particles of the desired size: S = 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mm. The densification process was carried out at temperatures T = 25, 50, 100, 150 and 200 °C, subjecting the straw to a compaction pressure of 15 MPa. Based on experimental studies, two values of the densification degree were determined: x1—the densification degree under load; and x2—the densification degree after unloading. The densification degree x2 is more relevant from the perspective of storage and transport. ANOVA analysis of the results showed that the most significant factors affecting x1 were particle size S and process temperature T, with higher x1 values obtained for straw moisture of 30%. The ANOVA analysis of the densification degree after unloading (x2) revealed that higher x2 values were achieved for straw with 10% moisture and the smallest particle size of 10 mm. The most significant factors affecting x2 were particle size and moisture content. Studies of the friction coefficient between the straw and the materials of the densification equipment components indicated that the optimal process temperature is 150 °C. The conducted research and the obtained results determined the optimal input parameters for the process and also provided a solid support for further studies, including investigation of the influence of other factors, such as binders.
The use of agricultural residues in biogas plants is becoming increasingly important, as they represent an efficient and sustainable substrate alternative. Pelletizing straw can have positive effects on transportation, handling, and biogas production. In this study, different grain straw pellets from mobile and stationary pelleting plants in Germany as well as the corresponding untreated straw were characterized and investigated for their suitability for anaerobic digestion (AD). Therefore, tests on the biochemical methane potential (BMP) and the chemical–physical characterization of unpelletized straw and straw pellets were carried out. The characterization of the pellets and the straw revealed a high average total solid content of 91.8% for the industrially produced straw pellets and of 90.8% for the straw. The particle size distribution within the tested pellet samples varied greatly depending on the pelleting process and the pre-treatment of the straw. In addition, a high C/N ratio of 91:1 on average was determined for the straw pellets, whereas the average higher heating value (HHV) content of the pellets was 17.58 MJ kg−1. In the BMP tests, the methane production yields ranged from 260–319 normal liter (NL) CH4 kg−1 volatile solids (VS) for the straw pellets and between 262 and 289 NL CH4 kg−1 VS for the unpelletized straw. Overall, pelleting increases the methane yield on average from 274 to 286 NL CH4 kg−1 VS, which corresponds to an increase in methane yield of 4.3%. Based on the results, the feasibility of using straw pellets for AD could be confirmed, which can facilitate the possibility of increased biogas production from agricultural residues such as straw pellets and thus make the substrate supply more sustainable.
