Optimizing Re-Chlorination Injection Points for Water Supply Networks Using Harmony Search Algorithm

Abstract: In order to achieve the required residual chlorine concentration at the end of a water network, the installation of a re-chlorination facility for a high-quality water supply system is necessary. In this study, the optimal re-chlorination facility locations and doses were determined for real water supply systems, which require maintenance in ord3r to ensure proper residual chlorine concentrations at the pipeline under the present and future conditions. The harmony search algorithm (HSA), which is a meta-heuris… Show more

“…are some of the tools used in the papers included in this Special Issue. Optimization tools can be used to achieve energy efficiency in pressurized irrigation networks [10] and also to indicate the optimal re-chlorination locations and doses in water supply systems [3]. Optimization tools can be also used to identify the optimal valve installation for improving the robustness of water distribution systems [6].…”

“…Propato and Uber [5] achieved optimization by setting an objective function as the minimal total of the squared deviations of residual concentrations to assess the effects of rechlorination, focusing on equalization. More recently, Yoo et al [6] used a harmony search algorithm, a meta-heuristic optimization method, to study issues requiring the installation of a rechlorination facility to determine the rechlorination points for minimizing the disinfectant mass.…”

“…Chlorine reacts to natural organic matters within the volume, to the bio-membranes within the pipe walls, and to the pipe material, causing decay. Generally, chlorine decay models are classified into a first-order decay and power-law decay (nth order) of second or higher order, according to the form of the attenuation equation (Carrico and Singer [23]; Yoo et al [6]). The primary chlorine attenuation model for the volume and wall reaction is commonly used in studies for its simplicity and availability (Courtis et al [24]; Powell et al [25]; Tamminen and Ramos [26]).…”

“…Regarding DBPs, several studies tried to minimize the operational and capital cost of the injection boosters [24], using also hydraulic simulation models [25,26]. Other studies [27] tried to optimize the booster locations and the disinfectant doses allowing for proper residual chlorine in present and future conditions.…”
