Optimizing setup of scan number in FTIR spectroscopy using the moment distance index and PLS regression: application to soil spectroscopy

Abstract: Vibrational spectroscopy such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), has been used successfully for soil diagnosis owing to its low cost, minimal sample preparation, non-destructive nature, and reliable results. This study aimed at optimizing one of the essential settings during the acquisition of FTIR spectra (viz. Scans number) using the standardized moment distance index (SMDI) as a metric that could trap the fine points of the curve and extract optimal spectral fingerprints of the sample. Furthermore, it ca… Show more

“…The surface of the sample in each well was flattened using a spatula to facilitate spectral scanning. The spectra recording was conducted between 4000 and 600 cm −1 with 4 cm −1 as resolution, and the scan number was set at 60 scans per acquisition [18], using a Bruker Tensor II bench-top spectrometer Massachusetts, USA at the Soil Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Centre of Excellence for Soil and Fertilizer Research in Africa, at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, Morocco.…”

“…Because of the solid state, the KBr pellet procedure is used to prepare the samples for IR spectral analysis. The compound's spectrum is recorded using a "Perkin Elmer Spectrum Two FTIR-ATR spectrophotometer equipped with a diamond as the internal reflection element, and 100 scans at a resolution greater than 2 cm -1 " [18]. The conversion of camphor into nano-size particles is initiated with a grinding process; for this purpose, Kanchan Ganga grinding machine is utilized.…”

“…Therefore, infrared spectrum analysis and stress analysis of phosphate rock were conducted. The phosphate rock at different positions in the mining area (area 1#, 2#, 3#, and 4#, as shown in Figure 1) was assessed by Fourier infrared spectrometer (Barra et al, 2021;Enders et al, 2021). The infrared spectrum analysis results of ore rock at different positions are shown in Figure 2.…”
