Optimizing the Extraction of Anti-tumor Polysaccharides from the Fruit of Capparis spionosa L. by Response Surface Methodology

Abstract: Capparis spionosa L. is a traditional medicinal plant in China and central Asia. In this study, an experiment was designed to investigate the optimization of the extraction of anti-tumor polysaccharides from the fruit of Capparis spionosa L. (CSPS) by response surface methodology (RSM). Four independent variables (extraction temperature, extraction time, ratio of water to sample and extraction cycles) were explored. Meanwhile, the in vivo anti-tumor activity of CSPS was investigated. The results showed that th… Show more

“…Response surface methodology is a collection of statistical and mathematical techniques for optimization study [20] and is widely used to optimize conditions for extracting active compounds from herbs [21,22]. The main advantage of RSM is to reduce the number of experiments necessary to conduct the research.…”

“…Response surface methodology (RSM) is an effective model for optimizing complex processes, and it saves more labor and time than other methods [13]. RSM is easy to carry out, and it has already been applied to optimize the extraction conditions of polysaccharide in previous researches [14,15].…”

“…More importantly, a growing amount of researches have shown that polysaccharides could resist tumors by inducing tumor apoptosis [6,7]. Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz., a member of genus Taraxacum, is a folk medicine which was used to treat viral infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders, etc.…”

“…Taking into account industry operating convenience [14], the confirmatory experiment was tested under the conditions: ethanol concentration 81%, ratio of solvent to sample 14 mL/g, extraction time 160min. A mean value of yields of TTA (3.41 ± 0.07 %, n = 3) was obtained, and the difference between the real value and the predicted value was not significant (p > 0.05).…”
