Oral Hypoglycemic Effect of Caesalpinia bonducella

Abstract: The blood sugar lowering efficacy of the aqueous extract of Caesalpinia bonducella F. (seed shell) was evaluated in fasted, fed, glucose loaded, streptozotocin diabetic, and alloxan diabetic rat models. The extract was administered orally at a dose of 250 mg/kg of rat body weight. It produced very significant blood sugar lowering (at least P < 0.005) in glucose loaded, streptozotocin diabetic, and alloxan diabetic models. However, effects were not so pronounced in fasted and fed models. As a whole, Caesalpinia… Show more

“…Blood sugar lowering activity of Caesalpinia bonducella has been primarily evaluated with significant results in rabbit (Rao et al, 1994). Hypoglycemic activity of different extracts of Caesalpinia bonducella seed shell has been reported previously from our laboratory in physiological hyperglycemic and type 1 and type 2 diabetic model rats (Biswas et al, 1997;Chakrabarti et al, 2003). The present communication elaborates the study of different extracts of Caesalpinia bonducella seeds in chronic type 2 diabetic model and study of fractions from seeds of Caesalpinia bonducella on isolated islet cells of rat pancreas.…”

“…Besides this, multiple therapeutic properties like antipyretic, antidiuretic, anthelmintic, antiasthmatic, antibacterial, antiestrogenic, antiamoebic, anticonvulsant, and antiviral activities have been reported from various parts of this plant (Neogi and Nayak 1958;Dhar et al 1968;Gayaraja et al 1978;Adesina 1995). In rabbit and rat models, the blood sugar lowering activity of this plant has been well established (Rao et al 1994;Biswas et al 1997;Sharma et al 1997;Chakrabarti et al 2003). Gupta et al (2003) worked out the hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties of C. bonduc.…”

“…Besides, the aqueous solution of the outer shell of the seeds of Caesalpinia bonducella has also been used traditionally by the tribal people of Andaman and Nicober Islands for the relief of the symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Blood sugar lowering activity of Caesalpinia bonducella has been primarily evaluated with significant results in rabbit (Rao et al, 1994) and rat models (Biswas et al, 1997;Sharma et al, 1997).…”
