Oral Lutein Supplementation Enhances Macular Pigment Density and Contrast Sensitivity but Not in Combination With Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Abstract: PURPOSE. It has been shown that lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macula where they enhance contrast sensitivity and may reduce the risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Furthermore, omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) might further reduce this risk. However, controversy exists regarding whether PUFA may reduce the bioavailability of lutein.METHODS. This was a prospective 12-month, randomized, open label study evaluating the effect of supplementation wi… Show more

“…Previous work has shown that MPOD is important for optimal visual performance and may protect against AMD because of the antioxidant effect of lutein and zeaxanthin [33][34][35][36]. The present study demonstrates that consumption of 12 eggs per week for a period of 1 year signifi cantly raises serum zeaxanthin concentrations and reduces glare recovery time and may improve, but not signifi cantly, serum lutein concentrations and MPOD in patients diagnosed with early AMD.…”

“…Resveratrol is well-absorbed, but its bioavailability is low [45]. Cells were treated at concentrations ranging from 0 to 27.17 µM for curcumin, 0 to 70 µM for lutein [46], and 0 to 43.9 µM for resveratrol [47].…”

“…In addition, lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation can improve visual performance in glares [ 24 ]. MP can also increase contrast sensitivity [ 25 , 26 ]. Both of these issues are major problem in POAG patients.…”
