Orbital Fractures

Abstract: Surgery for orbital trauma is challenging. A good understanding of the orbit, its normal form, function, and the varying patterns of its disruption due to trauma is essential for its proper management. The aim of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive clinical overview of all facets of orbital trauma for the young surgeon. The chapter has been structured to include the basics of (i) anatomy, (ii) biomechanics of injury, (iii) classification and their clinical implications, (iv) surgical approaches and (v) … Show more

“…Repair of orbital fractures is also performed to prevent long term enophthalmos, hypoglobus, or diplopia. 1 Indications to repair orbital fractures are not firmly defined and vary by source and surgeon preference. However, they are typically based upon defect size as increased orbital volume predisposes to the long-term complications.…”

“…The alternative theory is the buckling theory which posits that an initial force against the infraorbital rim is transmitted through the orbit until reaching the thinner bones resulting in fracture. 1,2 Some believe the actual biomechanical pathophysiology resulting in orbital fracture is a combination of these 2 processes. 3,4…”

“…Unsightly morphological changes may occur in various circumstances being either post-traumatic (consequences of hitting, bodily injury, acts committed intentionally or through fault) or they can be acquired post-surgically [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Visible scars, especially those located on the face, have aesthetic and psychological consequences, such as increased anxiety and low self-esteem.…”

“…Among orbital traumas, orbital floor fracture is a frequently encountered injury 1 . Orbital tissue herniation through a fractured orbital floor into the maxillary sinus occurs frequently and causes diplopia 1 .…”
