Ordovician trilobites from the Romaine and Mingan formations (Ibexian-late Whiterockian), Mingan Islands, Quebec

Abstract: The Romaine Formation of the Mingan Islands, Québec, contains a limited trilobite fauna of five genera (Bolbocephalus, Peltabellia, Petigurus, Strigigenalis, Strotactinus) with Lower Ordovician Ibexian (Floian) affinity, succeeded by two genera (Acidiphorus, Pseudomera) of early Middle Ordovician Whiterockian (Dapingian) affinity. Trilobites of later Whiterockian (Darriwillian) affinity are more abundant in the overlying Mingan Formation, with 29 genera (Amphilichas, Bathyurus, Calyptaulax, Ceraurinella, Cybel… Show more

“…The palpebral lobes are smaller than in the new species, and the maximum glabella constriction more posterior. Shaw (1968) and Shaw & Bolton (2011) revised Bumastus limbatus Raymond, 1910b, from the Chazy Group type area and the Mingan Islands, Quebec, respectively, and reassigned this species to Failleana (Shaw & Bolton 2011). This species has a much less 'waisted' glabella and longer pygidium (sag.)…”

“…The phylogenetic analysis has been applied by Amati and Westrop (2004) to systematically revise the relationships between Illaenus , Nanillaenus , and Thaleops . The result indicates that the species of Illaenus are a paraphyletic group and require major revision, while the species of Nanillaenus and Thaleops form a monophyletic group, so Nanillaenus is synonymized with Thaleops , all of which has also been followed by Shaw and Bolton (2011) and Carlucci and Westrop (2015). Previously described Chinese illaenids bearing strongly abaxially protruded palpebral area and short (sag.)…”

“…However, we consider that Opsypharus and Failleana are distinct genera, and we restrict Failleana to the species (all Ordovician) listed by Chatterton and Ludvigsen (1976, p. 38) as well as F . limbata (Raymond, 1910) of Shaw and Bolton (2011, p. 433, fig. 11.10–11.18, 11.23) from the Mingan Formation of Quebec, F. memorabilis (Reed, 1906) from the lower Balclatchie Group of Scotland (see Morris and Tripp, 1986, p. 165, pl.…”
