Oregano essential oil vapour prevents Plasmopara viticola infection in grapevine (Vitis Vinifera) and primes plant immunity mechanisms

Abstract: The reduction of synthetic fungicides in agriculture is necessary to guarantee a sustainable production that protects the environment and consumers’ health. Downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola is the major pathogen in viticulture worldwide and responsible for up to 60% of pesticide treatments. Alternatives to reduce fungicides are thus utterly needed to ensure sustainable vineyard-ecosystems, consumer health and public acceptance. Essential oils (EOs) are amongst the most promising natural … Show more

“…EOs physiological impacts have been and can be studied at the metabolomic [113], proteomic [114] and transcriptomic [115] levels and large amounts of untargeted data will emerge by grouping these techniques of research together. As phytotoxicity is either a goal (herbicide) or a constraint (other biopesticidal application or biostimulation), both parts will be discussed separately.…”

“…Phenolic compounds constitute a large group of secondary metabolites, which are produced via different branches of the phenylpropanoid pathway. They are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom and function as pigments, antioxidants, signaling molecules, structural elements, and components of defense mechanisms (Rienth et al, 2019 ; Santos-Sánchez et al, 2019 ).…”

“…In hightemperature summer, the incidence of anthracnose is high, which changes the morphology and physiology of fruits and vegetables, and finally makes fruits and vegetables lose their commercial value (Santos et al, 2013). In terms of food preservation, oregano essential oil can prevent the infection of sporomycetes on grapes (Rienth et al, 2019). Illicium verum essential oil has demonstrated its practical efficacy as a new biological fumigant in the preservation of lotus seeds (Li et al, 2020).…”
