Organic Electroluminescent Devices with 8-Hydroxyquinoline Derivative-Metal Complexes as an Emitter

Abstract: Organic electroluminescent (EL) devices with 8-hydroxy-quinoline derivative-metal complexes (Znq2, Beq2, Mgq2, ZnMq2, BeMq2 and AlPrq3) as the emitter have been developed. The emissions of these devices are green or yellow. These devices have a luminance of more than 3000 cd/m2. In particular, the EL device with Znq2 has a luminance of 16200 cd/m2.

“…This value is in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements which report the IP of AlQ3 to be B6 eV. 51,52 As with neutral AlQ3, H 2 O approaches the AlQ3 1 and forms a reactant-like AlQ3 1 Á Á ÁH 2 O complex. Bond lengths and relative energies for the AlQ3 1 Á Á ÁH 2 O complex and for the separated reactants are presented in Table 1.…”

“…The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of these devices are close to the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of corresponding Mq3 molecules [1][2][3]. The similarity of the EL and PL spectra was also observed for zinc complexes with hydroxy-substituted quinolines, benzothiazoles and related ligands [4][5][6].…”

“…Zinc complexes studied in the present work contain amino groups bonded to metal atom and produce exciplexes in pair with triarylamine molecules NPD and PTA. Note that the analogs of our complexes containing oxygen atom bonded to metal such as Mq3, Znq2, Zn(BTZ)2 do not exhibit exciplexes in their EL spectra when triarylamine hole-transporting materials like NPD or TPD are used [1,[3][4][5][6]47]. At the same time, the derivatives of Alq3 containing amino groups bonded to quinoline species exhibit EL exciplex bands for the devices with NPD [27].…”

“…Therefore it is needed to find more stable (8- * E-mail: tsuboi@cc.kyoto-su.ac.jp hydroxyquinolinolate)-metal compounds. A candidate is bis(8-hydroxyquinoline) zinc (Znq 2 ), which has been presented to be useful for high efficiency and low operating voltage OLEDs [2,5,6].…”
