Organic-inorganic composite materials from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers (ABS) and silica through anin situ sol-gel process

Abstract: Nonbonded and chemically bonded organic-inorganic composite materials, ABS/SiO 2 and ABSOSi(OCH 3 ) 3 /SiO 2 , were prepared by the sol-gel processing of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of ABS and trimethoxysilyl functionalized ABS, ABSOSi(OCH 3 ) 3 , under the catalization of NH 4 F. The ABSOSi(OCH 3 ) 3 was obtained by oxidizing the cyano group in ABS with hydrogen peroxide, then subsequently underwent ring-opening reaction with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS). The ABSOSi(OCH 3 ) 3 /TEOS so… Show more

“…This is due to the formation of heteroassociated hydrogen bonds between carboxylic acid groups of PCL-g-AA and the titanium-bonded isopropyl group. 28 In addition, acetate ligands of the PCL-g-AA/TiO 2 hybrid can participate in a direct condensation reaction that yields isopropyl acetate as a byproduct along with the Ti-O-Ti condensed bridge. 4,29 Similarly, a condensation reaction can also occur between free acetic acid and bound isopropyl groups or free alcohol and bound acetate, and the possible combinations of ester production will ultimately create oxygen linkages between titanium atoms, as was also indicated in the work of Birnie and Bendzko.…”

“…Recently, preparation of inorganic/organic hybrids has been intensively studied in terms of combining the sol‐gel reaction of organic‐metallic compounds with polymerization reactions 4–9. A wide range of inorganic/organic hybrids could be prepared by appropriate selection of raw materials and preparative approaches to achieve various properties and to meet the requirements of different applications.…”

“…When the silica molecule is surrounded and stabilized with several hydrophilic groups in the organic polymer, organic polymers containing hydrophilic group-silica composites synthesized by the sol-gel method do not phase-separate. 3,16,[57][58][59][60] And in the sol-gel method, clear phase separation was not observed for the composites with PHPS and P(MMA-co-HEMA) when the PHPS content was low. 48 In contrast to the sol-gel method, the microphase separation became clearer by increasing of the PHPS feed.…”

“…59,63,64 When PHPS was used, the thermal stability of the composite depends on the preparation method. 51 Figure 4 shows thermal degradation behavior of PMMA, PMMA-block-PHEMA and PMMAsilica nanocomposites prepared by blending the solution (a solution method) and by soaking the microphase-separated film into the PHPS solution (a soaking method).…”
