Organic matter and nitrogen balance in rabbit fattening and gaseous emissions during manure storage and simulated land application

Abstract: Expansion in global rabbit populations and in the number of rabbits raised for consumption necessitates assessment of the environmental impact and sustainability of rabbit production systems. This study undertook two evaluations: utilization (animal efficiency) of organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N) produced from feed during rabbit fattening, and emission of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from rabbit manure during its storage and land application in laboratory-simula… Show more

“…The second group, which consisted of the composts, had an N Fig. 2 Analytical data (moisture, N, P 2 O 5 , K 2 O, organic matter content, and humus potential) for the raw manures and composts collected in Bafoussam (B) and Yaoundé (Y) and comparison with the data reported in the literature (Li) (in g 100 g -1 DM) for (i) hen droppings (Agarry et al 2010;Dekker et al 2012;Edwards and Daniel 1992;Li et al 2015;Nicholson et al 1996;Olowoboko et al 2018;Pan et al 2009), (ii) rabbit manure (Chabalier et al 2006;Ciesielczuk et al 2017;Dinuccio et al 2019;Gómez-Brandón et al 2013;Lazcano et al 2013;Li et al 2015;Moral et al 2005;Moreno-Caselles et al 2002;Paredes et al 2015;Wu et al, 2010;Youssef and Eissa 2017), (iii) goat manure (Agarry et al 2010;Al-Kindi et al 2016;Azeez et al 2010;Cavalcante et al 2010;Haidar et al 2003;Kafle and Chen 2016;Lopez Fernandez et al 2018;Mafongoya et al 2000;Olowoboko et al 2018;Paredes et al 2015;Shamsul et al 2018;Zhang et al 2013), (iv) pig manure (Adesanya et al 2016;Bernal et al 2009;Dhyani et al 2018;Hamm et al 2016;Hjorth et al 2010;Karimi et al 2018;Li et al 2015;Moreno-Caselles et al 2002;...…”

“…The most common approach for the solid and the liquid fractions obtained after the separation is their use as fertilizer. There is particular concern about the emission from the resulting solid fraction [145][146][147][148][149][150] due to the higher area for gas exchange compared to the liquid fraction (Figure 8). While the gaseous emitting area of the slurry is the horizontal cross-section of the storage tank, the shape of the pile of dried organic manure was described by Dinuccio et al [146,147] as a truncated cone heap with a greater area to volume ratio.…”

“…In recent years, the competitiveness of the rabbit industry has become strong, especially in Hungary, France, and Spain, since rabbits are the second largest farmed species in Europe. Similarly, China and Argentina also have large rabbit breeding industries ( Dinuccio et al., 2019 ; Li and Wu, 2021 ). Subsequently, a large quantity of rabbit manure is produced, which may cause environmental pollution if not treated effectively.…”
