Organic Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery for Passenger Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Abstract: Electrification of road transport is a major step to solve the air quality problem and general environmental impact caused by the still widespread use of fossil fuels. At the same time, energy efficiency in the transport sector must be improved as a steppingstone towards a more sustainable future. Multiple waste heat recovery technologies are being investigated for low-temperature waste heat recovery. One of the technologies that is being considered for vehicle application is the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). I… Show more

“…The only difference between HEV and PHEV is that in PHEV, electric propulsion serves as the main driving force. This leads to a bigger battery capacity requirement in PHEVs (Wirasingha et al, 2015;Kramer et al, 2016;Willianson, 2016;Bin Wan Ramli et al, 2020;Dzulkfli et al, 2020;Soldado et al, 2021). PHEVs operate in "all electric" mode, and when the batteries are low, the ICE is used to charge or step-up the battery pack.…”

“…Kong et al investigated ORC thermodynamically with different heat sources at the evaporator [4]. Bin et al recovered the residual heat of a hybrid passenger vehicle using ORC and obtained an ORC efficiency of 5.4% [5]. Kheiri et al did a comparative study with different ORC configurations employing distinct working fluids.…”

“…For instance, the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Pure Electric Vehicles (PEV), and Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV) were developed to replace the traditional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV). 4,5 In recent years, fuel cells (FCs) have attracted more attention due to their high efficiency and pollution-free characteristics. However, the FCs need an air compressor to provide compressed air, and the air flow cannot be rapidly changed.…”
