Organic speciation of atmospheric particles in Alvão Natural Park (Portugal)

Abstract: PM(10) continental rural background aerosols were collected during a summer field campaign (August-September 2006) at Lamas de Olo in the upper zone of the Alvão Natural Park, a mountain region of northern Portugal. In addition to the determination of the carbonaceous content by a thermal-optical method, the organic speciation of aerosols was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in an effort to evaluate photo-oxidation products of biogenic volatile organic compounds and other markers for source ch… Show more

“…Isoprene SOA has substantial influence on climate by contributing to the pool of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) (see Carlton et al, 2009, and references therein). Furthermore, the photooxidation of isoprene produces important biogenic SOA tracers 2-methyltetrols and 2-methylglyceric acid (2MGA) (Claeys et al, 2004;Wang et al, 2005;Alves et al, 2010).…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9] The portion resulting from the anthropogenic sources is composed of two classes of compounds: one is inorganic (e.g., metals, sulphates, nitrates, ammonium) and other is a carbonaceous fraction (i.e., total carbon). The compound classes for tracking the particle emissions from motor vehicles consist of several homologous series of petroleum biomarkers (hopanes and sterones).…”

[5][6][7][8][9] The portion resulting from the anthropogenic sources is composed of two classes of compounds: one is inorganic (e.g., metals, sulphates, nitrates, ammonium) and other is a carbonaceous fraction (i.e., total carbon). In particular, the carbonaceous material is considered a very important parameter for the urban air quality evaluation.…”

“…Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, C 5 H 8 ), the most abundant nonmethane hydrocarbon in the atmosphere, is a major precursor to secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Photooxidation of isoprene produces a number of compounds that end up in SOA, including tracer molecules 2-methylglyceric acid (2MGA) and 2-methyltetrols. Oligomer formation by particle-phase accretion reactions is significant in isoprene SOA. , …”
