“…Despite some progress in studying the possibility of enhancing the antioxidant properties of albumin, the development of the methods for correcting oxidative stress taking into account this ability of the protein is still in its infancy. Recently, such classes of compounds as thiol antioxidants ( n -acetylcysteine, carbocysteine and erdosteine), superoxide dismutase mimetics (magnesium-containing porphyrins), NADPH oxidase inhibitors (apocinin, diphenyliod), setanaxib traps (disulfenton sodium), activators of the transcription factor Nrf2 (Sulforaphane, Bardoxelone methyl, Dimethylfumarate) have been actively tested or are already being used to reduce oxidative stress [ 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 ]. It might be that in the future it will be possible to create the complex therapy for oxidative stress management taking into account the functional properties of albumin.…”

“…Sulfides, disulfides, and other organosulfur compounds (OSC) are widely present in our bodies and the natural environment. They can interact with or neutralize ROS and determine the thiol/disulfide redox states in signaling and sensing, thus maintaining our bodies healthy or contributing to development of diseases [253].…”

“…Nevertheless, oxygen is not always available in plenty amounts, for example, in ischemic states. In such cases, some artificial or natural electrophiles (electron acceptors) could be helpful, and this property has been exploited for elaborating a new type of therapeutics with the help of OSC, polyphenols, and other nutraceuticals [250,253]. Nutraceuticals could serve not only as electrophiles, but also as a kind of "pro-electrophilic drugs" that become electrophilic in response to oxidation with subsequent activation of the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE transcription pathway and synthesis of endogenous antioxidant "phase 2" enzymes [252].…”

“…Also, SFN has been shown to reduce muscle inflammation by acting as an indirect antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, by activating the Nrf2induced inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway (53). Regardless of whether OSC comes from Allium or Brassica genus, it seems to serve the same role against inflammation (54).…”
