The present paper aims to investigate the relative sea-level and the coastal evolution during the Holocene in the Rio de Janeiro coastline, based on geological and biological indicators. Using topographic survey, excavation and coring, and 14 C dating of these coastal deposits and beachrocks outcrops, we have reconstructed a sealevel curve for the Holocene. For the first time on the Brazilian coast it was identified a negative record of relative sea-level during Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene transition. After the transition, a relatively rapid increase of sea-level began. At approximately at 8500 cal yr BP, the sea-level was 0.5 m below the current level, was overtaken for the first time in the Holocene, at approximately 7500 cal yr BP. The maximum level of +2.5 m was reached between 4770 and 4490 cal yr BP. At the point of maximum transgression, the sealevel began a general behavior of lowering until the present. These results confirm other data already obtained elsewhere along the Atlantic coast of South America. The results of this study are consistent with previous researches and they help to refine the Holocene sea-level record along the Brazilian coast.

This paper shows that the location of the shoreface bank reefs along the northeastern and eastern coasts of Brazil, in a first order approximation, seem to be controlled by the deficit of sediment in the coastal system. The sediment transport pattern defined by a numerical modeling of wave refraction diagrams, representing circa 2000 km of the northeastern and eastern coasts of Brazil, permitted the regional-scale reproduction of several drift cells of net longshore sediment transport. Those drift cells can reasonably explain the coastal sections that present sediment surplus or sediment deficit, which correspond, respectively, to regions where there is deposition and erosion or little/no deposition of sand. The sediment deficit allows the exposure and maintenance of rocky substrates to be free of sediment, a favorable condition for the fixation and development of coral larvae.

Resumo:Rochas de praia (beachrocks) marcam a linha de costa pretérita e a constituição sedimentar de paleopraias. Em ambiente de micro-marés defi nem com precisão a posição do nível médio do mar na ocasião do processo de litifi cação. O presente trabalho objetiva estudar os "beachrocks" da Ilha do Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo -Rio de Janeiro do ponto de vista geológico, geomorfológico, petrográfi co e geocronológico. O método de trabalho constou de coleta de material, análise petrográfi ca e datação ao radiocarbono. Resultados obtidos sugerem que os "beachrocks" da referida ilha foram formados entre 11.900 a 3.800 cal anos A.P. Essas idades correspondem a condições de nível do mar abaixo do atual, no nível atual e acima do nível marinho em relação ao atual durante o Holoceno. Identifi cou-se através deste trabalho a passagem entre o Pleistoceno e o Holoceno no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, corroborando propostas de outros autores.
