Osler-Weber-Rendu disease: A rare cause of recurrent hemoptysis

Abstract: Osler-Weber-Rendu disease, also known as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, is a rare autosomal dominant condition causing systemic fibrovascular dysplasia. It has an incidence of 1-2/100,000. Phenotypic variation is extreme ranging from asymptomatic to severely symptomatic, from cases with no or few mucocutaneous lesions to those with diffuse cutaneous telangiectasia. We discuss a case of Osler-Weber-Rendu disease causing diffuse cutaneous telangiectasia and hemoptysis. The patient presented with complain… Show more

“…Believed to be the result of sporadic mutations in nearly 20% of cases with no positive family history, HHT is an autosomal dominant disease [8]. The definite diagnosis of this condition is established when a patient has 3 of the following signs and symptoms: telangiectasia, epistaxis, visceral lesion, and family history [8].…”

“…Osler Weber Rendu syndrome (OWRS) or hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder with incidence of 1-2 cases per 100,000 populations. 1 Pathologic dilation of post-capillary venules leads to diffuse distribution of arteriovenous malformations in the skin, mucosal surfaces increase as the age increases. Iron deficiency anemia from spontaneous recurrent epistaxis and gastrointestinal bleeding is very common and it was noticed in our patient.…”
