Osteogenic effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on peri-implant bone: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on promoting osseointegration around dental implants. Study selection: A comprehensive search was performed on two databases, including MEDLINE (PubMed) and Web of Science to identify relevant studies published before June 1, 2022. Randomized controlled trials that met the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. The year of publication, study design, animal species, number of animals, number of implants, implant position… Show more

“…LIPUS has been found to enhance bone healing surrounding dental implants (Wang et al, 2023), promote alveolar bone regeneration in periodontal bone injury models, increase osteogenic activity, inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption (Wu et al, 2021), and regulate the interaction between osteoblasts and osteoclasts, thereby promoting the balance of alveolar bone remodeling (Zhou et al, 2023). Additionally, LIPUS exhibits preventive and reparative effects on root resorption caused by orthodontic treatment and can expedite tooth movement (Adly et al, 2023).…”

“…The primary method of physical treatment targeting implantation sites is low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), which can promote bone trabecular reconstruction around the implant area in the early stage. However, due to the long treatment cycle and considerable cost of the LIPUS, its utilization is significantly restricted . Recently, titanium implant surface modification has emerged as a chief method for promoting osseointegration, including surface bioactive substances loading, hydrophilization, and so on. Titanium was discovered in 1790 and has been extensively used in biomedicine since the latter half of the first century.…”
