Osteotome Sinus Floor Elevation and Simultaneous Placement of Implants – A 1‐Year Retrospective Study with Astra Tech Implants

Abstract: The OSFE technique, without bone grafts, was found to produce predictable results in the treatment of 36 patients with restricted bone volume in the posterior part of the maxilla.

“…Bone gain results in this study agree with those published by other authors who have carried out maxillary sinus augmentation using osteotomes of between 4.5mm and 6.5mm in posterior sectors where bone density is low (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). In studies made with cadavers, Blanco and colleagues obtained an intra-sinus bone increase of 4-8 mm in height and they evaluated the bone density achieved using osteotomes (39.38 ± 9.67 SD mm), comparing this with the density achieved using drills (31.06 ± 5.9 SD mm).…”

“…Six references (16,17,(19)(20)(21)(22) reported bone gains ranging from 1.8 to 5.7 mm using a crestal approach with no graft placement. Deviations in reporting and data collection prevent a meaningful statistical analysis other than noting the consistency of results.…”

“…When there is greater than 5 mm of bone, the success rate for implants placed immediately using the crestal approach without a graft ranges from 86 to 98% (7,(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)29). The success rates comparing the placement of implants from the crestal approach with osteotome technique to conventional placement of the use of a 2 step lateral window were similar (23, 28).…”

“…However, both approaches seem to yield similar success rates. [13][14][15][16] A less invasive and more predictable TSFE technique was conceived by exploiting the superior handling characteristics and unique delivery system of CPS putty. The consistency of CPS putty also helps in minimizing membrane perforations and associated adverse events.…”
