Background There are several physiological changes found in pregnant women and amongst them, otological changes are quite important. The otological manifestations in pregnant women are mainly due to changes of sex hormones levels, which return to normal in the postpartum period. Objective To report otological manifestations among pregnant women. Materials and methods Eighty-four pregnant women participated in this prospective study. A questionnaire was administered in all participants for assessing otological manifestations. The pregnant women were in the age range of 22–35 years. They underwent thorough otological and obstetric examinations. Pure tone audiometry (PTA) was done for assessment of hearing loss. Results The mean age of the pregnant women in this study was 26.23 years. The most common otological manifestation was sensation of ear blockage. Eustachian tube dysfunction was common in the last trimester of pregnancy. Other manifestations included vertigo and tinnitus. Conclusion The alteration of hormonal milieu in pregnant women can lead to several otological manifestations, including eustachian tube dysfunction, hearing impairment, otitis externa, Bell’s palsy, vertigo and tinnitus. Despite these otological manifestations found in pregnant women, yet they are often neglected in clinical practice.

Background: Pregnancy is characterized by various endocrinological and physiological changes affecting different organs including ear, nose and throat. Otorhinolaryngological manifestations in pregnant women are mainly due to changes in levels of sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. While majority of these conditions are benign and reverse after parturition, some do not. The study was conducted with an objective to find the incidence of various otorhinolaryngological manifestations among pregnant women and to create awareness among the medical professionals to diagnose these conditions.Methods: This is a hospital based cross sectional study of 240 pregnant women who presented to the department of otorhinolaryngology with ENT symptoms. Detailed history, general physical examination and complete ENT examination was done on all subjects.Results: 47.9% of the study cases had otological manifestations among which otitis media was the main finding.16.7 % of the cases had nasal symptoms among which rhinits was the main condition predominantly observed in the 3rd trimester. 19.6% of the cases had oral cavity lesions with stomatitis being the most commonly found cause. 15.8% of the cases had throat complaints, among which gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) was the most common cause found during 2nd and 3rd trimester.Conclusions: Recognition and understanding of pregnancy related ear, nose throat complaints will allow otolaryngologist to reassure and manage these patients, improving their experience of the gestational period.

ÖZOrtalama 40 haftalık gebelik süresi, beraberinde fizyolojik ve hormonal değişiklikleri barındırır. Burun tıkanıklığı ve rinit semptomları gebenin yaşam kalitesini ve uyku düzenini olumsuz etkileyen başlıca sorunlardır. Rinolojik sorunlar, gebelik öncesinde tanı almış (septum deviasyonu, alerjik rinit vb.) ya da gebelik süresince belirginleşen (gebelik riniti, rinosinüzit, vb.) nazal tıkanıklık ve burun akıntısı semptomlarıyla karakterizedir. Aslında dikkatli bir öykü, bize sorunun süresi ve şiddeti hakkında ipucu verebilir. Alerjik rinit tanısı almış bir hastada nazal steroid kullanım öyküsü ile septum deviasyonu tanısı sonrasında önerilmiş operasyon varlığıyla sorunun kaynağı belirlenebilir. Öyküde, burun tıkanıklığı ve horlama sorunu, süresi, gebelikle ilişkisi, gebelik öncesinde burun akıntısı, hapşırık, koku bozukluğu, operasyon öyküsü varlığı, kullanılan ilaçlar bize rinolojik semptomların etiyolojisinde anlamlı ipuçları verebilir. Sonuç olarak, gebelik öncesinde rinolojik sorunlar için tedavi planlanması, hastanın eğitilmesi ve bilgilendirilmesi rahat bir gebelik sürecinde olası rinolojik sorunların çözümü için anlamlı katkı sağlamaktadır.Anahtar kelimeler: Gebelik, rinolojik sorunlar, tanı ve tedavi ABSTRACT Gestational period which lasts approximately 40 weeks harbours physiological and hormonal alterations. Nasal congestion and symptoms of rhinitis are the primary problems that affect pregnant woman's quality of life and sleep pattern adversely. Rhinologic problems are characterized by nasal congestion and nasal drip that are diagnosed preconception (septum deviation, allergic rhinitis etc.) or become evident during pregnancy (pregnancy rhinitis, rhinosinusitis etc). In fact, a carefully taken history may give us some clues about the duration and severity of the problem. In a patient who was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis the source of the problem can be identified through a history of nasal steroid usage and the operation recommended after septum deviation was diagnosed.Consequently, planning therapy for the preconception rhinologic problems, training and informing the patient will make important contributions to the resolution of rhinologic problems in a comfortable gestation process.
