Outbreak of Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis Caused by Human Adenovirus Type 56, China, 2012

Abstract: HAdV-56 is a new recombinant type isolated from epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) patients and has been sporadically isolated in Japan several times. Here, an outbreak of EKC in the city of Dalian, China involving a large number of workers in two factories was reported; this was the first outbreak of EKC associated with HAdV-56 worldwide.

“…Another new serotype, HAdV-56, was found to be the causative agent for a large scale of outbreak of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, with 451 cases in the Dalian City in 2012 [63]. The HAdV-14p1 seems more associated with kids, being isolated from a baby with pneumonia in Beijing and causing an outbreak of febrile respiratory illness in a primary and a middle school in Gansu in 2011, which was the first school-based HAdV-14p1 outbreak in the world [61].…”

“…8 Ads are obligate intracellular pathogens that are fully dependent on the cellular replication machinery. [11][12][13] Common symptoms are keratitis, conjunctivitis, edema, pain, lacrimation, formation of pseudomembranes and decreased vision. The acyclic nucleoside analogue cidofovir has been shown effective against EKC-causing Ads.…”

“…Classically the primary EKC causing adenoviruses have been HAdV-D8( 4042 ), 37( 4244 ), and 64( 42, 45 ) (previously classified as 19a( 46 )). More recently other species D adenovirus have been associated with EKC, including HAdV-D53(previously classified as HAdV-D22/H8)( 47, 48 ), 54( 49 ), 56( 50 ).…”
