Outbreak of human listeriosis associated with tomme cheese in northwest Switzerland, 2005

Abstract: During an eight week period in spring 2005, 10 cases of listeriosis were reported in a small area of northwest Switzerland (150 000 inhabitants). Eight cases were in older immunocompromised patients who became ill with bacteraemia (three deaths), and two cases were in pregnant women who had septic abortion.

“…cheeses were ripened for 11 days at 12-13°c and 95% relative humidity of the air, and then stored for another 11 days at 6°c (closed circles, control; closed triangles, with phage a511; open diamonds and dotted line, surface ph). 25 For phage indicator strain L. ivanovii WSLC 3009 cm r , chloramphenicol (7.5 μg/ml) (Sigma) was added to the media. Phage A511 lysates were prepared and purified as previously described in reference 31.…”

“…The latter had been isolated in 2005 from a listeriosis outbreak in Switzerland, involving white mold soft cheese. 25 Thus, it appears to be better adapted to this specific environment than strain Scott A, which is a clinical isolate, 26 and had been held under laboratory conditions for many years. Similar observations regarding L. monocytogenes strain-specific growth differences have been reported for other cheese models and related studies.…”

“…This underlines the public health and economic impact that an outbreak associated with this food type might have. In the past decades, Switzerland was hit by such outbreaks twice: from 1983 to 1987 in connection with "Vacherin Mont d'Or" soft cheese, which led to a high mortality and a high number of encephalitis cases, as well as in 2005 related to "Tomme" soft cheese (Büla et al, 1995;Bille et al, 2006). As a consequence to the 1983 to 1987 outbreak the Swiss government decreed the creation of the Listeria Monitoring Program (LMP), which is still in effect today.…”

“…Although an association between listeriosis in animals and the ingestion of contaminated feed had already been suggested in the 1960s, it was not until the 1980s that L. monocytogenes was recognized as a causative agent of food-borne outbreaks in humans (Schlech et al, 1983). Since then, it has been associated with a wide range of different foodstuffs, including two types of Swiss soft cheese (Büla et al, 1995;McLauchlin, 1996;Bille et al, 2006). Compared to other food-and feed-borne infections, listeriosis is a relatively rare disease.…”

“…Two large outbreaks in human population were reported from California, (Linnan et al, 1988), and Switzerland, (Bille, 1990). Another listeriosis outbreak occurred in Switzerland during 2005 (Bille et al, 2006). Two outbreaks of listeriosis were reported in Finland, in 1998and 1999(Lyytiksinen et al, 2000Maijala et al, 2001).…”
