Outcome evaluation in shoulder surgery using 3D kinematics sensors

Abstract: A new method of scoring systems for the functional assessment of the shoulder is presented. 3D accelerometers and gyroscopes attached on the humerus were used to differentiate a healthy from a painful shoulder. The method was first tested on 10 healthy volunteer subjects with no shoulder pathology. The system was then tested on 10 patients with unilateral shoulder pathology (rotator cuff disease, osteoarthritis) before and after surgery (3, 6 months). In order to evaluate the system, nine tests based on the Si… Show more

“…In this case 150 • of abduction was achieved in 0.7 s. The last movement was also a simple abduction with (t) = 0 and (t) = 0, but Â(t) was obtained from in vivo recorded data [25].…”

“…Each motion sensor consists of a tri-axial accelerometer and gyrometer, collecting three-dimensional linear acceleration (A x , A y , A z ) and three dimensional angular velocity (G x , G y , G z ,) at a sampling frequency of 500Hz. This sampling frequency is much higher when compared with the sensors being used in some other previous studies, ranging from 20 to 200Hz (Bernmark & Wiktorin, 2002;Coley et al, 2007), as to collect adequate data during vigorous sprain motions which happen within 50ms (Fong et al, 2009). …”

“…In order to show a clinical application of the proposed methods, one patient suffering from a rotator cuff disease implying a right shoulder supraspinatus rupture of 1 cm 2 (48 years old, right-handed) was studied. In this study two inertial modules with three miniature capacitive gyroscopes (Analog device, ADXRS 250, ±400 deg/s) were fixed by a patch on each dorsal side of the distal humerus and one module with 3D gyroscopes and three miniature accelerometers (Analog device, ADXL 210, ±5 g) on the thorax [2] (Fig. 1).…”
