Outcomes of Extracapsular Cataract Extraction and Phacoemulsification Performed in a University Training Program

Abstract: * BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: As the number of older Americans increases, more patients will need cataract extraction surgery. Outcome studies will be necessary to assess and improve the quality of care. This study documents the outcomes of extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) performed at Oak Forest County Hospital (OFH) and phacoemulsification (PE) performed at the University of Chicago Hospitals (UCH) by residents who were training at the University of Chicago. * PATIENTS AND METHODS: Residents… Show more

“…Cataract extraction induces greater anterior chamber depth, which might affect the zonules, ciliary body, and angle structures [ 29 ]. This interaction with the ciliary body might prevent SC narrowing [ 30 ] and facilitate the outflow of aqueous humor. Interestingly, our study showed that the combined cataract extraction and GATT was more effective than combined cataract extraction and CT. Bektas et al [ 31 ] reported that the simultaneous phacoemulsification surgery was a positive prognostic factor on the surgical success rate of the GATT.…”
