Outdoor Air Quality as Influenced by Vehicular Exhaust in Metropolitan City of Lahore, Pakistan

Abstract: This study was conducted to estimate the contribution of vehicular exhaust gases towards ambient air quality in Lahore, Pakistan during 2017. LANDCOM-III flue gas analyzer was used for determination of vehicular exhaust pollutants (CO, SO2, NO2, NO, H2S, HC) for five vehicles groups (motor bikes, Qingqi rickshaw, local cars, imported cars and public transport vans) from April to September, 2017. Major pollutants were compared with their National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) for the country. Ambient a… Show more

“…The measurement of carbon monoxide concentration in the ambient air recorded a range of values from zero to 54.0 ppm, with an average value of 23.28 ppm. The sampled locations exhibited notable variances, with the DHA housing area, Miani Sahib graveyard, Iqbal town, and Paragon City (all are residential areas) showing the lowest recorded concentration, whereas the Railway Station showed the highest which are agreement with levels reported in earlier studies (Shah & Arooj, 2019). Typical sources include vehicle exhaust, cigarette smoke, and others.…”

“…It has also been discovered that public vehicles, such as rickshaws and vans, contribute significantly more to air pollution than other vehicle types in the city (Kashif et al, 2019). High levels of PM2.5 in Gulberg Station and Jail Road Station areas were due to higher vehicle emissions, industrial emissions, and crop residue burning (Basheer et al, 2019).…”

“…According to Xi et al (Xie et al, 2019), nearly half of the global emissions of volatile components impacting air quality stem from vehicles. Pakistan faces substantial challenges in its transportation sector, necessitating an upgrade to cleaner vehicle models and the implementation of legislation concerning vehicle maintenance and monitoring (Shah and Arooj, 2019). The proliferation of private vehicles, notably in Punjab province, which boasts around 19.6 million vehicles, including 6.2 million in Lahore alone (Zahid, 2020), poses a grave threat to air quality.…”
