Output Filter with Adaptive Damping for Interleaved Converters with Low Ripple and High Dynamics

Abstract: Interleaved DC-DC converters are used in a wide range of applications offering a high current rating combined with ripple cancellation. In these systems, the design of the output stage is of crucial importance since it not only influences the output ripple at steady state but also affects the dynamic performance of the system. In particular, by reducing the output filter, a higher dynamic performance can be achieved, making interleaved converters especially interesting for high performance sources, used for ex… Show more

“…Due to its high nominal amplitude (more than 1kA) and its high bandwidth, an expensive sensor would be required [36]. Therefore, the total converter current i con,obs is calculated by adding the available module currents i L,i and the load current i Load is assumed to be approximately equal to i con , which is guaranteed by the design of the output filter in systems acting as current sources [14]. Furthermore, an observer based on the state space representation of the system (e.g.…”

“…In order to protect the switches from overheating and limit the switching losses, a maximum average switching frequency f max window within a defined time window needs to be set. The average switching frequency fwindow is then calculated as given in (13), where N is defined in (14), and p[k] is 1, if a rising edge is detected for switch S 1,i (Fig. 1) and 0 otherwise.…”

“…For example, in [8,9] pulses with a rise time of tens of µs and with a length of a few µs are investigated and the presented damping network is based on passive circuit elements only. In [10,11], a hybrid damping network is presented for applications, which require pulses in the ms/s range and with a rise time of hundreds of µs. The hybrid damping network consists of active switches and passive components.…”

“…The DynACuSo uses SiC MOSFETs (in the multi-phase buck converter) to increase the switching frequency and therefore the bandwidth of the system, allowing a higher dynamic performance that surpasses the targeted 10 A µs −1 . The increased inductance value per module combined with the higher switching frequency and the interleaved modulation strategy, enables operation with very low output current ripple in the ppm range, despite the use of a very low output capacitance [15]. The concept of the DynACuSo, its operation principle and a detailed simulation study has already been presented in [14].…”
