Ovarian hemangioma?report of three cases and review of the literature

Abstract: We have encountered three cases of ovarian hemangiomas found incidentally at the time of surgery. Ovarian hemangioma should be considered when a hemorrhagic ovarian tumor is encountered. Although often an incidental finding at surgery, these lesions may rarely be associated with systemic manifestations.

“…These are differentiated from cavernous hemangiomas, which commonly involve deeper structures and do not spontaneously regress. Hemangiomas have previously been reported in a variety of endocrine organs, including thyroid [2,3], ovaries [4,5], and adrenal glands [6,7]. To our knowledge, only three previous cases have been reported in the parathyroid, all of which presented in abnormal parathyroid glands from patients with clinical history of hyperparathyroidism [8,9].…”

“…Thus, Tet-mev-1 mice show excessive intracellular oxidative stress, presumably because they are chronically subject to elevated levels of superoxide anion from mitochondrial complex II owing to the SDHC V69E mutation. Given this, it is not surprising that the Tet-mev-1 ovaries were swollen and vacuolated with increased angiogenesis such as ovarian hemangiomas [25], as well as increased apoptosis detected as TUNEL-positive cells in ovarian interstitial cells (Fig. 2C).…”

“…The occurrence of ovarian hemangioma in a patient treated with tamoxifen has never been reported in the literature. Ovarian hemangiomas are very rare and histologically may be cavernous or capillary with the first type being the most common [1]. The difference between them relates to the size of the blood vessels formed.…”

“…Ovarian hemangiomas may occur in association with generalized hemangiomatosis or as an isolated neoplasm. While in the first case, patients have an high risk of intravascular coagulation and Kasabach-Merritt syndrome [1], isolated hemangiomas are usually incidental findings due to their small size and asymptomatic nature. We report a case of ovarian hemangioma in a patient treated with tamoxifen for breast ductal carcinoma.…”
