Over 50 Years of Potato Parental Line Breeding Programme at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute in Poland

Abstract: The paper describes the potato parental line breeding programme developed in Poland from the 1960s. The aim of the programme was to create parental forms useful for speeding up the breeding of new potato varieties and getting higher efficiency in directed selection for desired traits. The programme introduced new sources of resistance and quality traits into the Polish breeding pool by conducting research and breeding of tetraploid and diploid parental lines. The programme had significant impact on potato bree… Show more

“…Our phenotyping approach, based on pollen microscopy, heavily relies on the premise that pollen size correlates with pollen ploidy. This correlation has been consistently reported across various species (Ramsey and Schemske 1998 ), including in potato (Mok and Peloquin 1975a , b ; Ramanna 1979 ; Iwanaga and Peloquin 1982 ; Dongyu et al 1995 ) where it is routinely used by breeders for designing interploidy crosses (Zimnoch-Guzowska and Flis 2021 ). However, it is essential to acknowledge that factors beyond ploidy may influence pollen size.…”

“…Unreduced gametes have been successfully used in potato breeding program to introduce genes conferring resistance to various pathogens from diploid wild relatives of potato to tetraploid landraces and cultivars (Ortiz et al 1994 ; Capo et al 2002 ; Zimnoch-Guzowska and Flis 2021 ). An interploidy breeding scheme combining the ease of diploid breeding and the heterozygosity of tetraploids was proposed 60 years ago (Chase 1963 ; Hutten et al 1994 ).…”

“…In addition to late blight research and control of the disease using fungicides, potato breeding programs continuously developed new potato cultivars with high resistance to late blight [ 4 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Plant resistance is divided into two types: vertical resistance (race-specific) and horizontal (race-non-specific, partial resistance) [ 20 ].…”

“…Выведение фитофтороустойчивых сортов является целью многих исследовательских программ (Milczarek et al, 2017;Rogozina, Khavkin, 2017;Zimnoch-Guzowska, Flis, 2021). Для вовлечения в гибридизацию фитофтороустойчивого материала проводят полевую оценку в условиях высоких естественных инфекционных фонов Karki et al, 2021).…”
