Overcoming barriers to reach for a helping hand: adolescent boys’ experience of visiting the public health nurse for mental health problems

Abstract: Mental health problems among adolescents have become a public health issue in Norway. However, few adolescent boys seek help for their mental health problems. This study focus on adolescent boys' experiences related to visiting the public health nurse for mental health problems. “… Borgman et al (2020) found a significant association between having pain and having depressive symptoms, meaning adolescents reporting pain may have other problems as well. The school nurses in the current study wanted to make a difference by showing how much they care about adolescents’ mental health and to be a supportive adult with an open-door policy, which is described by Granrud et al (2020) as being an important way of reaching out to boys.
