Overexpression of a maize dehydrin gene, ZmDHN2b, in tobacco enhances tolerance to low temperature

Abstract: Dehydrins, a subfamily of group 2 LEA proteins, are intrinsically unstructured plant proteins that accumulate in the late stages of seed development and in vegetative tissues subjected to water deficit, salinity, low temperature, or abscisic acid treatment. In this study, we isolated and characterized ZmDHN2b, a maize dehydrin gene. The genomic organization of the ZmDHN2b gene and its expression in maize seedlings were analyzed. To investigate the function of ZmDHN2b, we generated transgenic tobacco plants con… Show more

“…SK n and K n -type DHNs are closely related to cold acclimation (Rorat 2006). Therefore, considering the association of SK 3 -type DHN genes to cold tolerance (Danyluk et al 1994;Houde et al 2004;Rorat 2006;Yin et al 2006;Xing et al 2011), Cucurbitaceae SK 3 -type DHNs in Group I might be important for cold tolerance (Fig. 1).…”

“…MDA is the organic compound with the formula CH 2 (CHO) 2 and usually used as a marker for lipid peroxidation (Dong et al 2003). EL reflects membrane injury severity after abiotic stresses (Xing et al 2011). Under drought stress, the MbWRKY2-overexpression transgenic plants generated smaller amounts of MDA and H 2 O 2 , and had the lower EL levels than in WT (Figure 6).…”

“…Leaf relative water content (RWC) was estimated according to RWC (%) = (fresh weight -dry weight)/(turgid weight -dry weight)×100 (Wang et al 2009). Electrolyte leakage (EL) in tobacco leaves was determined following the protocols described by Xing et al (2011).…”

“…Thermal dissipation acts as a main way to alleviate photoinhibition [11,31]. NPQ is a light-inducible process that competes and diverts absorbed energy from photochemistry to balance light harvesting and photosynthetic performance [16,32]. NPQ has been shown to be quickly responsive to high light stress and functional in preventing the over-excitation of photochemical reactions via dissipating excessive excitation energy into heat [11,33].…”
