Overexpression of Hevea brasiliensis ethylene response factor HbERFIXc5 enhances growth and tolerance to abiotic stress and affects laticifer differentiation

Abstract: SummaryEthylene response factor 1 (ERF1) is an essential integrator of the jasmonate and ethylene signalling pathways coordinating a large number of genes involved in plant defences. Its orthologue in Hevea brasiliensis, HbERF‐IXc5, has been assumed to play a major role in laticifer metabolism and tolerance to harvesting stress for better latex production. This study sets out to establish and characterize rubber transgenic lines overexpressing HbERF‐IXc5. Overexpression of HbERF‐IXc5 dramatically enhanced plan… Show more

“…Although these two transcription factors are orthologues to ERF1, which controls a large panel of defence genes, there is no evidence for the activation of genes encoding ROS-scavenging enzymes ( Piyatrakul et al 2014 ). Interestingly, overexpression of these two HbERF genes conferred a better tolerance to abiotic stress ( Lestari et al Submitted ).…”

“…Although a large number of genomic data and transcriptome data of rubber tree can be obtained [9][10][11], but few functional genes have been proved in rubber tree [12][13][14][15]. Functional gene analysis is still a major challenge lacking e cient and reliable genetic transformation system [15,16].…”

“…The physiological functions of rubber molecule and latex remain intrigue [7,8]. To date, rubber biosynthesis pathway has been well characterized [8], the whole-genome data and transcriptome database became available in rubber tree [9][10][11], but only a few NR biosynthesis-related genes functions are evaluated by transgenic rubber tree due to low genetic transformation e ciency [12][13][14][15]. The development of an e cient and reliable rubber tree transformation system is still challenging [15,16].…”

“…Moreover, in the present study we observed an increase in the ERF1 expression that may be connected with the oxidative stress present in the NC. ERF1 is upregulated during the stress response to abiotic stressors such as water deficit, cold and salt treatment (Lestari et al 2018;Makhloufi et al 2014). The ethylene and jasmonate pathways converge in the transcriptional activation of ERF1 in order to prevent the progression of a disease in Arabidopsis (Lorenzo et al 2003).…”
