Overexpression of interleukin-35 associates with hepatocellular carcinoma aggressiveness and recurrence after curative resection

Abstract: Background:Aberrant expression of interleukin-35 (IL-35) has been implicated in dampening antitumour immunity. The aim of this study was to explore the prognostic significance of IL-35 expression in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following curative resection. Furthermore, we aimed to formulate an effective prognostic nomogram for HCC after hepatectomy. Methods:Immunohistochemistry was applied to explore IL-35 expression as well as CD39+Foxp3+ and Foxp3+ regulatory T cell (Treg) infiltration in tis… Show more

“…IHC analysis of EBI3 expression also showed correlation of IHC results with Ebi3 mRNA expression (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hep.29904/suppinfo). In addition to tumor cells, EBI3 expression was also clearly observed in stromal cells (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hep.29904/suppinfo), as observed . These stromal cells were mainly CD20 – CD79α + plasma cells, but a small fraction of CD20 + B cells also expressed EBI3 (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hep.29904/suppinfo).…”

“…Interleukin-35 (IL-35) is a newly discovered member of the interleukin family with anti-inflammatory and immune inhibitory effects [7,8]. Recently, it has been demonstrated that IL-35 plays an important role in tumor progression, including lung cancer [9], pancreatic cancer [10], nasopharyngeal carcinoma [11], gastric cancer [12], hepatocellular carcinoma [13][14][15], breast cancer [16,17], renal cell carcinoma [18] and colorectal cancer [19,20]. However, the underlying mechanisms of IL-35 in NSCLC remain unknown.…”

“…[14,16] Consistent with the present study, several studies reported MVI as an independent risk factor for prognosis and incorporated it into prognostic nomograms. [19,34,35,43,44] Nonencapsulated HCC was prone to direct liver invasion, tumor microsatellite formation, and vascular invasion. [45] Unfavorable outcomes were observed among patients with nonencapsulated HCC in most studies, which were in accordance with our results.…”
