Overexpression of SERBP1 (Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 RNA binding protein) in human breast cancer is correlated with favourable prognosis

Abstract: BackgroundPlasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) overexpression is an important prognostic and predictive biomarker in human breast cancer. SERBP1, a protein that is supposed to regulate the stability of PAI-1 mRNA, may play a role in gynaecological cancers as well, since upregulation of SERBP1 was described in ovarian cancer recently. This is the first study to present a systematic characterisation of SERBP1 expression in human breast cancer and normal breast tissue at both the mRNA and the protein level.M… Show more

“…Potential importance of Serbp1 in tumour progression has been reported. [36][37][38][39] High resolution of cryoelectron microscopy of the 80S ribosome of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells has shown the presence of Serbp1 in the 40S subunit. 40 However, Serbp1 was not identified in the 80S ribosome of HeLa cells by using the same microscopic method 41 (although recent cross-linking The isoforms 1 and 2 of rat Serbp1 were listed as significant candidates.…”

“…SERBP1 has also been shown to play a crucial role in cancer (28, 31). Identifying the role of the LRH1-SERBP1-ILF3 transcriptional complex may shed light into novel function of these proteins and their involvement in cancer progression.…”

“…Although PAI-1 levels were not measured in this study, our LRH1 siRNA experiment suggests that a similar effect on PAI-1 would have been seen since SERBP1 expression was significantly increased. Pertinent to cancer, SERBP1 overexpression has been correlated with a favorable prognosis in human breast cancer (28). LRH1 has been extensively studied in breast cancer.…”

“…Some of the genes including SERBP1 47 , RPS12 48 , HSD17B 49 and KPNB1 50 from which the novel peptides were identified, are known to be associated with breast cancers. Many of the abnormally spliced products may not be active.…”
