Overmoded GW-class surface-wave microwave oscillator

Abstract: Abstract-Results of theoretical and experimental studies of a GW-class, large diameter microwave oscillator are presented. The device consists of a large cross-section (overmoded), slow-wave structure with a unique profile of wall radius specifically designed to support surface waves and to provide a strong beam-wave coupling at moderate voltage (500 kV), an internal adjustable microwave reflector, a coaxial microwave extraction section, and a coaxial magnetically insulated field emission electron gun. In prel… Show more

“…In the process of Cherenkov-type interaction the electron bunching is caused by the axial component of the electric field E z given by Eq. (4). Correspondingly, taking into account the excitation of the forward wave C þ z by RF electrical current induced by an electron beam the self-consistent equations describing nonlinear dynamics of surface-wave oscillator can be presented in the form…”

“…To overcome these problems, the overmoded structure is the best choice, though it was introduced for increasing the maximum handling power in microwave devices at first. [12][13][14] So an overmoded RSWO, one of typical Cerenkov devices, is adopted to generate 0.14 THz high power radiation in our design. The 0.14 THz RSWO with key structural parameters denoted is schematically shown in Fig.…”

“…Among various HPM sources, slow wave type devices [3][4][5][6][7][8] are very attractive for their high efficiency and high stability, which are mainly due to the following two reasons. First, with the help of the guiding magnetic field, electron beams of high quality could be obtained, which can achieve better beam wave interaction with the slow wave structures (SWSs).…”
