Overview of the ICESat Mission

Abstract: The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) has provided a view of the Earth in three dimensions with unprecedented accuracy. Although the primary objectives focus on polar ice sheet mass balance, the GLAS measurements, distributed in 15 science data products, have interdisciplinary application to land topography, hydrology, vegetation canopy heights, cloud heights and atmospheric aerosol distributions. Early laser life issues have been mitigated wi… Show more

“…Our study combines satellite stereo-image digital elevation model differencing (dDEM) with repeat-track laser altimetry from the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat; Schutz et al, 2005), with the objective of providing an assessment of surface elevation change resolved at the scale of the major glacier catchments. We used stereo-image data from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER; Fujisada et al, 2005) and Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre 5 (SPOT5; Korona et al, 2009).…”

“…The reliability of ICESat altimetry data used for investigating water level changes of Tibetan lakes has been confirmed by comparing with hydrological station data, radar altimetry, and lake area data derived from optical images [1,2,7,21,22]. We obtained the ICESat Level-2 altimetry data (Release-33) during 2003-2009 from National Snow and Ice Data Center [3,10].…”

“…One of the advantages of ICESat laser altimetry is the small footprint size with a diameter of ~70 m [10], which makes it an effective alternative to measure elevations of earth surface at a fine scale. However, the short temporal coverage of ICESat data (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)) impedes the investigation of change trends of water level at a long timescale.…”

“…However, the J2 zonal harmonic perturbation model is not suitable for missions with higher precision and reliability requirements. For example, missions like TOPEX/Poseidon (Aorpimai and Palmer 2007), ICESat (Schutz et al 2005), and TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X (D'Errico 2013) require the groundtracks to be within a threshold of 1 km from the reference trace. The Chinese-French Oceanic Satellite (CFOSAT) (Xu and Huang 2014;Zhu et al 2015) currently under development has a stringent demand for the gridding division of the ground to enable precise mapping.…”
