The offshore Adriatic Basin holds more than 50% of Italian gas reserves together with significant volumes of oil. A number of large and giant‐size biogenic gasfields and medium to large oilfields have been discovered here during the past 60 years. Two petroleum systems have been identified: a Plio‐Pleistocene biogenic gas system, and an Upper Triassic – Lower Jurassic oil system. These systems are described in this paper within a regional geological framework, with particular focus on petroleum system elements (source, reservoir, seal, trap and charge). The biogenic gas play was for several decades the prime focus of Italian E&P efforts throughout the Adriatic area but is now mature, and significant additional discoveries are unlikely to be made without a breakthrough in DHI (direct hydrocarbon indicator) technology. The Mesozoic oil play is as yet unproved in the northern Adriatic area, where large anticlinal structures at depths of up to ca. 6000 m are available for exploration and constitute high‐risk – high‐reward targets. By contrast, the play is proved in the Central and Southern Adriatic where several oilfields are currently producing. Exploration targets still exist here and may generate medium‐sized discoveries although the prevalent heavy‐oil phase may jeopardize their economic value.

Methane (CH 4 ) is a powerful greenhouse gas and, over a 20-year period, the global-warming potential of 1 tonne of atmospheric CH 4 is similar to ca. 85 tonnes of CO 2 (Hartmann et al., 2013). Global CH 4 emissions have increased nearly 10% over the past two decades (Schiermeier, 2020) and its atmospheric concentration is now more than 2.5 times above pre-industrial levels, approaching 1.9 ppm. CH 4 has a short lifetime in the atmosphere, ca. 10 years (Prather et al., 2012), and hence a stabilization/reduction of emissions will lead in a few decades to a stabilization/reduction of its atmospheric concentration and therefore its radiative forcing (Saunois et al., 2020). The most important source of uncertainty in the global CH 4 budget is attributable to natural emissions (Saunois et al., 2020), and particularly to geological seepage. Indeed, once considered a minor natural CH 4 source globally, geological degassing is today recognized as a major contributor to atmospheric CH 4 (Etiope et al., 2019). A challenging aspect on the quantification of present-day emissions is that seepage sites may be more widespread and abundant than expected, especially in the marine environment (Thornton et al., 2020). We investigated the spatial relationships among 18 known seismogenic faults and 1651 wells drilled for gas exploitation in the main hydrocarbon province of northern-central Italy, a unique dataset worldwide. We adopted a GIS approach and a robust statistical technique, and found a significant anticorrelation between the location of productive wells and of the considered seismogenic faults, which are often overlain or encircled by unproductive wells. Our observations suggest that (a) earthquake ruptures encompassing much of the upper crust may cause gas to be lost to the atmosphere over geological time, and that (b) reservoirs underlain by smaller or aseismic faults are more likely to be intact. These findings, which are of inherently global relevance, have crucial implications for future hydrocarbon exploitation, for assessing the seismic–aseismic behaviour of large reverse faults, and for the public acceptance of underground energy and CO2 storage facilities—a pillar of future low carbon energy systems—in tectonically active areas.
