Overview: On the transport and transformation of pollutants in the outflow of major population centres – observational data from the EMeRGe European intensive operational period in summer 2017

Abstract: Abstract. Megacities and other major population centres (MPCs) worldwide are major sources of air pollution, both locally as well as downwind. The overall assessment and prediction of the impact of MPC pollution on tropospheric chemistry are challenging. The present work provides an overview of the highlights of a major new contribution to the understanding of this issue based on the data and analysis of the EMeRGe (Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional to Globa… Show more

“…There, they summarize: "… we can state that HALO is capable of acquiring high-quality 3d wind data up to 100 Hz during straight and leveled flight". Comparison with other turbulence measurements exist for the HALO-FAAM formation flight on 13 July 2017 during the EMeRGe European intensive operational period (Andrés Hernández et al, 2022); details of this comparison are documented in Schumann (2020). As discussed below, the low frequency velocity spectra measured by HALO agree well with other observations (Schumann, 2019).…”

“…From 10 until 28 July 2017 the Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional and Global scales (EMeRGe EU) was investigated in Europe (Andrés Hernández et al, 2022). The focus of EMeRGe EU determined the flight tracks, to be in the lower troposphere, where anthropogenic pollution is most abundant.…”

“…The measurements were carried out with a single particle soot photometer (SP2) mounted on the HALO (High Altitude and LOng range) research aircraft. This study compares data from in situ measurements during non-confinement conditions in July 2017 (during the EMeRGe EU campaign, Andrés Hernández et al, 2022) with those affected by reduced emissions in May and June 2020 (during the BLUESKY campaign, Voigt et al, 2022). The measurements were performed while most of the lockdown confinements were still active; however, the strictest lockdown was between the middle of March until the middle of May (Fig.…”

“…It was put to regular and increasing use and greatly matured during the last decade. Thus, it has contributed to the successful implementation of the POLSTRACC, StratoClim, WISE, EMeRGe, SouthTRAC, CIRRUS-HL, and TI3GER aircraft measurement campaigns (Oelhaf et al, 2019;Höpfner et al, 2019;Kunkel et al, 2019;Andrés Hernández et al, 2022;Rapp et al, 2021). The focus has been to improve the ease-of-use both for the actual flight planning, but also for setting up the server component.…”
