Ovine pericardium as a new material for duraplasty

Abstract: The authors report on their 2 1/2-year clinical experience using a dural substitute, ovine pericardium, stabilized with 0.3% glutaraldehyde, flat freeze-dried, and sterilized with gamma-irradiation. Packaging of the ovine pericardium in double-plastic transparent bags allows simple storage in operating rooms and the opportunity for the surgeon to choose an ideal graft according to its shape, size, and plasticity. The ovine pericardia were examined histologically and by transmission and scanning electron micros… Show more

“…At the present time, allogeneic fascia lata is collected and processed under aseptic conditions, decontaminated by s.c. cold shock [8], packed in plastic bags and stored at a temperature of -50~ till -80~ Xenogeneic pericardium is stabilized by 0.3% glutaraldehyde, for 14 days freeze-dried packed in doubled plastic bags, sterilized by gamma radiation at a dose of 25 kGy and stored at room temperature [19,20,25,301, In allogeneic pericardium the glutaraldehyde stabilization was omitted, the graft was freeze-dried and sterilized by gamma radiation at the same dose. Allogeneic dura mater is processed by antigen extraction and by immersion to NaOH solution to prevent Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) transmission.…”
