Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress triggers the vicious cycle leading to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the nigra pars compacta. ROS produced during the metabolism of dopamine is immediately neutralized by the endogenous antioxidant defense system (EADS) under physiological conditions. Aging decreases the vigilance of EADS and makes the dopaminergic neurons more vulnerable to oxidative stress. As a result, ROS left over by EADS oxidize the dopamine-derived catechols and produce… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
