Oxidative stress and human health

Abstract: Redox degenerative reactions of the biological system inevitably produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their derivatives. Oxidative stress is the result of an imbalance in pro-oxidant/antioxidant homeostasis that leads to the generation of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide, organic hydro peroxides, nitric oxide, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals etc. Information are accumulating steadily, supporting the general importance of oxidative damage of tissue and cellular components as … Show more

“…Animal and human cells have developed a ubiquitous antioxidant defence system consisting of SOD, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase, together with dietary intake of low molecular weight antioxidants such as ascorbate, a-tocopherol, glutathione, and vitamins (Wei & Lee 2002;Lobo et al 2010;Rahman et al 2012). Thus, supplemental intake of LF extract plays a similar role as a natural antioxidant in preventing oxidative stressinduced cell damage and modulating antioxidant enzymes.…”

“…The large generation of free radicals, particularly reactive oxygen species and their high activity plays an important role in the progression of a great number of pathological disturbances such as inflammation, atherosclerosis, stroke, heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, cancer, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease [1,2] . Therefore, the great interest has been recently focused on the natural foods, medicinal plants and phytoconstituents due to their well-known abilities to scavenge free radicals (i.e.…”

“…15 Aging is a natural and progressive process producing functional changes in the body due to aforementioned internal and external factors that might manifest themselves as a chronic condition such as hypertension. In this study, patients' blood pressure largely fell within the mild category (systolic =140-159 and/or diastolic= 90-99 mmHg).…”
