Objective: To determine the association between major dietary patterns characterized by factor analysis and risk of depression and anxiety symptoms among adolescents. Design: Diet and symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed in a crosssectional survey among students attending junior high school. Dietary patterns were derived from a self-reported FFQ, which consisted of thirty-eight items. Anthropometric measurements were also performed. Setting: Four junior high schools in Bengbu city, China. Subjects: A random sample of 5003 adolescents, 11-16 years of age (mean 13?21 years). Results: Three major dietary patterns were identified in the study based on factor analysis: 'snack', 'animal food' and 'traditional'. The prevalence of depression symptoms, anxiety disorders and the coexistence of both were 11?2 % (560/5003), 14?6 % (732/5003) and 12?6 % (629/5003), respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, adolescents in the highest tertile of snack dietary pattern scores had a higher odds for 'pure' psychological symptoms ('depression without anxiety', OR 5 1?64; 95 % CI 1?30, 2?06; and 'anxiety without depression', OR 5 1?87; 95 % CI 1?51, 2?31) compared with coexisting depression and anxiety (OR 5 1?93; 95 % CI 1?54, 2?43). Similar to snacks, high consumption of animal foods was associated with a higher risk of psychological symptoms. Compared with low consumption, adolescents in the highest tertile of traditional dietary pattern scores had lower odds for 'pure' depression (OR 5 0?38; 95 % CI 0?30, 0?49), 'pure' anxiety (OR 5 0?85; 95 % CI 0?69, 1?04) and coexisting anxiety and depression (OR 5 0?50; 95 % CI 0?39, 0?63).

Introdução: O entendimento da fisiopatologia do transtorno bipolar vem tendo avanços consistentes nos últimos anos. Um enfoque na relação entre carga alostática e alterações sistêmicas vem tomando corpo, com o objetivo de se entender a frequente progressão da doença. Proeminentes entre os mediadores periféricos têm sido as moléculas que poderiam ser amplamente agrupadas em neurotrofinas, marcadores de estresse oxidativo e marcadores inflamatórios. Objetivo: Descrever achados recentes em relação à fisiopatologia sistêmica do transtorno bipolar, com enfoque especial em estudos brasileiros, tentando articular uma visão coerente do conhecimento atual do campo. Método: Revisão narrativa da literatura relacionada a neurotrofinas, estresse oxidativo e marcadores inflamatórios no transtorno bipolar. Resultados: Diversas fontes de evidência, provenientes tanto de estudos pré-clínicos quanto clínicos, revelam consistentemente alterações sistêmicas no transtorno bipolar. Os achados são especialmente robustos em pacientes com múltiplos episódios. Nesses, alterações relacionadas a episódios de mania e depressão são notáveis em neurotrofinas e dano oxidativo a lipídeos. Um número menor de estudos mostra alterações no sistema imune, em particular estados pró-inflamatórios. Conclusão: Alterações sistêmicas que correlacionam o transtorno bipolar a comorbidade clínica, disfunção cognitiva, incapacidade e mortalidade precoce começam a ser traçadas. Background: Depression is associated with stressful condition which may cause kidney damage. Oyster mushroom (plurotus florida) may have free radical scavenging activity thereby can be used for the prevention and treatment for kidney damage. Objective: to observe the effect of oyster mushroom (plurotus florida) on kidney in restraint stress induced depressed rats. Methods: This experimental study was conducted from July 2012 to June 2013 in the Department of Physiology, Sir Salimullah Medical College( SSMC), Mitford, Dhaka. Thirty Wister albino male rats, aged 90 to 100 days, weighing 150 to 180g (initial body weight) were used in the present study. Then they were divided into Group I (Control group, without mushroom n=20) and Group II (Experimental group, depressed rats supplemented with mushroom n=10). Control group without mushroom again subdivided into Group Ia,( baseline control n=10) and Group Ib (depressed control n=10) . All groups of animals were received basal diet for 28 consecutive days started from the 1 st day of the study period. Group Ib (depressed control) and group II (depressed mushroom supplemented) were housed under controlled condition in rat immobilizer (made up of steel wire, measuring 9´´ x 2.75´´ of light weight) for 6 hour/day for 28 days for the development of stress induced depression. In addition, only group II received oyster mushroom extract (200 mg/kg body weight, orally) for the same period. One rat of Group Ib (depressed control) was expired after 10 days for unknown cause. All 29 rats were sacrificed on day 30. Then blood sample and kidneys specimen were collected. Initial (initial bw ) and final body weights (final bw) were measured. Then estimation of blood glucose and serum urea levels were done by standard laboratory technique. Histology of kidney was done by standard laboratory procedure. Statistical analysis was done by using SPSS windows Version -16. One way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests were done as applicable. Results: In this study blood glucose level and serum urea level was significantly higher and abnormal histological structure was found in stress induced depressed rats. After taking mushroom extract for 28 days all the parameters were improved. Conclusion: From this study it can be concluded that oyster mushroom(Pleurotus florida) which is excellent edible and nutritious, may have renoprotective effect.
