Oxide dependent wear mechanisms of titanium against a steel counterface: Influence of SMAT nanostructured surface

Abstract: The analysis of the tribological behavior of a steel ball on pure titanium has been carried out under alternative motion on both, a coarse grained Ti surface and its nanostructured derivative obtained by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). Along the duration of the tribology test, variations in friction behavior were interpreted as a three stages sequence of different wear mechanisms that were controlled by the successive formation of Ti-rich and Fe-rich oxides. Surface nanostructures appeared to ch… Show more

“…This contamination layer is known to affect the reactivity and corrosion resistance of the SMAT treated surfaces [10]. Its chemistry was also shown to have determining consequences regarding the wear behavior of the shot peened surfaces due to its effect on the exact nature of the abrasive oxides that form during dry contact friction [44]. However, inclined propagation zones are visible in the vicinity of the surface for the shot peened samples, as outlined in Figure 4 b4 by the regions delimited by the curved dotted lines and pointed by the red arrows.…”

“…At the end of the test, the stage III friction duration against the SMAT-CT sample was twice higher than that against the SMAT -RT sample. [17]. Anatase transforms into rutile only after having been submitted to sufficiently elevated temperature (over 500 °C) [19].…”

“…Similar studies on tribological behavior of Ti64 against steel counter bodies have been conducted, making it a relatively widely explored field when compared with the tribological characterization of Ti64 against ceramic counter bodies. 28,29,30,31,32,33,34 Among the ceramic materials which are highly wear resistant, Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) is majorly employed in tribological testing due to its eloquent cost-to-performance ratio over other materials like silicon nitride, zirconia, 35 etc. Hong and Winer 36 conducted a tribological study on commercially pure (cp)-titanium in relative motion with Al 2 O 3 counter body, at both room temperature and at 400 °C. The formation of the tribo-oxide layer was reported.…”
