Oxygen effects on glucose meter measurements with glucose dehydrogenase- and oxidase-based test strips for point-of-care testing

Abstract: Different oxygen tensions do not significantly affect glucose measured with the GD-based amperometric test strips, and have minimal effect on GO-based photometric test strips. Increases in oxygen tension lowered glucose measured with GO-based amperometric test strips. We recommend that the effects of different oxygen tensions in blood samples on glucose measurements be minimized by using oxygen-independent test strips for point-of-care glucose testing in critically ill and other patients with high or unpredict… Show more

“…Potential confounding variables [19][20][21][22] and other unknown analytical or specimen matrix factors increase median absolute differences in the extremes of glucose values, as seen in the interval-specific analyses in Table 1. The modified Bland-Altman plots with superimposed ISO 15197 tolerance bands (Fig.…”

“…Among intensive care unit patients, where physiological extremes are the norm, accuracy must be maintained under widely varying conditions, including during fluctuations in hematocrit, PO 2 , PCO 2 , and pH, as well as in the presence of drug interferences [20][21][22]. ISO 15197-integrated Bland-Altman and LS MAD curves draw on human pattern recognition.…”

“…The majority of commonly used glucometers do not guarantee linearity at >500 or 600 mg=dL or <40 mg=dL. 4,14 This wider linear range of GlucoDr Plus may give some additional use for patients with extremely low or high levels of glucose that require immediate medical attention. The instrument may also be useful for neonates, who frequently have exceptionally low glucose levels, 15 and for those patients suffering from brittle diabetes with uncontrollable glucose levels.…”

“…However, this method requires oxygen to convert glucose into gluconolactone, which can result in spuriously elevated values when oxygen contents are high in capillary or arterial blood. 4 This problem can be overcome by using glucose dehydrogenase, which is not affected by oxygen content. However, the glucose dehydrogenasebased pyrroloquinoline quinine method is subject to interference by sugars other than glucose.…”

“…The sensitivity of these methods is likely to be highest at blood glucose levels in diabetic range and may drop at extreme values. In intensive care units, a number of potential inaccuracies may arise because of presence of metabolic acidosis , hypoxia (Tang et al, 2001), hypoperfusion www.intechopen.com (Atkin et al, 1991) or edema (Critchell et al, 2007). If the devise uses glucose oxidase method, it may give abnormally low glucose values at high blood oxygen levels (Tang et al, 2001).…”
