Ozonized Gel Against Four Candida Species: A Pilot Study and Clinical Perspectives

Abstract: Ozone therapy can display a wide range of clinical beneficial effects, including antimicrobial, immune-stimulant, analgesic, anti-hypoxic actions. However, there is still a paucity of data regarding the ozone fungicide activity. Oral Candida is the most common fungal infection in the mouth among denture wearers and people with weakened immune systems. In the case of generalized candidiasis or immunocompromised patients, systemic therapy is needed, while localized infections are treated with topic medications. … Show more

“…This makes it necessary to look for new therapeutic approaches. Alternative pharmacological antifungal agents have been considered, e.g., essential oils (tea tree oil) [ 14 , 15 ], lemongrass oil [ 16 ], oregano oil [ 17 , 18 ], Cinnamomum cassia [ 19 ], colloidal solutions of metal nanoparticles (silver, gold) [ 20 , 21 ], as well as methods such as ozone therapy [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], photobiomodulation [ 28 , 29 ] and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. The most promising of those agents seems to aPDT.…”

“…O ozônio é um composto natural, uma molécula composta por três átomos de oxigênio (1) incolor e com odor pungente, que tem atividade oxidante (2). Sua aplicação em terapias passou a ser vista como alternativa de tratamento em meados de 1930 (3) e, a partir de então, tem sido estudado por diversos pesquisadores.…”
